I Need Some Help!!

I'm 18 weeks...this if flying by! I decided I better start thinking about what happens after this baby really gets here. Here's my dilema...I just started looking at all these birthing and prenatal classes that my hospital offers, and I don't know which, if any, I should sign up for. There are so many of them, but they're a little time consuming! So any of you ladies who have had babies, I would love some input on what you tried and liked or didn't like. Breastfeeding, baby massage, lamaze (do people still do that stuff?!) first time mom and dad, third trimester class (?) Those are some offered, and I just don't know if these are really worth the time. Let me know if any of you have any thoughts...thanks ladies!

Lawrence and I started a weekend all day birthing class but didn't finish because the hospital went on lock down that day! yeah. The class was a little cooky... charades. I think it can be exciting to go experience this for your first baby and is much needed to prepare the dad (since they probably aren't reading all the books)! But like I said we were only there an hour and seemed to survive! I've heard it all depends on the teacher.

you know, these days the doctors have it all taken care of... esp if you're getting an epidural. i personally enjoy the ignorance of not knowing all the details and our delivery day was very enjoyable. i guess it all depends on your personality, if you really like to plan everything out or if you are ok with winging it!

Hey, Jacob and I watched this movie, or documentary, called, The Business of Being Born, made me rethink things... Its very interesting.
Having said that, if you get a good epidural the whole thing can be AWESOME! If you get a bad one, IT SUCKS!
I was just talking to this lady that has all her babies at home. Its pretty cool. Who knows? There are so many options. But decide what you want, or the doctors and nurses will take over and just do what they think is best for you. And know, you can do whatever YOU want. YOU R THE BOSS!
I will say, I liked being alone in the room with Jacob way more than having other people in there. Don't be afraid to say no to people. It was so cool, just us... (and all the doctors and nurses of course, :))

I delivered at St. Mark's and we took an all day Saturday and Friday night class. It was fun. I'm not going to do another one, because I know what to expect, but I would do it just for the experience since it's your first. It's fun doing that together! I didn't want to do the once a week one just because my hospital was in SLC. I am going to take an infant CPR class sometime, and wish I would have done that one before. I also would have liked more information on Breastfeeding, so that would be a good one (I had to figure that out at the hospital which wasn' too bad, but I would have liked to know how it all worked sooner!) Those are my top three recomendations!! Good luck!

Jake and I were just saying yesterday that we thought our birthing class was a huge waste of time and money. You will know everything you need to by the time the baby comes. So my vote would be to forego the classes.

I took one class and that was the breastfeeding one. I really enjoyed it! I wish it helped me get more milk but it was worth getting so much info. Don't stress girl! No matter what you won't be prepared like you want. Just know the basics and you'll do so great! I am so excited for you!

Brady and I really like the 3rd trimester class. It was fun and informative. :) I would recommend doing it with another couple if you can find someone.

We did the all day class, and left at lunch! I have sisters that tell WAY TOO MUCH, so I feel like I knew everything already. Like Gay said, as long as you're having an epidural maybe just do a general class that goes through breastfeeding, babies, and birthing. That'll just help grow your confidence a little before the baby comes. I know a lot of people take a breastfeeding class the first go round and say it helped a lot because breastfeeding can be really hard a frustrating at first. Anyway, yes we are all still running the Salt Lake. YOU?

We took a class at St Mark's. I really liked it because it seemed to put Bryson and me on the same page. He didnt know a whole lot about babies and birthing. Plus it is nice to have another person advocating foot rubs and back rubs for you. They also taught relaxation (your husband will help you) which can help you dialate more easily. hope that helps

i would attend the breastfeeding class if they offer one (more towards the time you deliver) It is kind of a daunting responsibility to keep a little one alive...when you don't have a clue what you are doing! Breastfeeding can be challenging...i wish i would have taken a class.

Michelle, you are so cute. I did kindof think that my hypnobirthing class seemed to be a long drawn out version of helpful information that I could have just read over the space of two days in the hypnobirthing book. . . . But, the classes are fun, and also is a good way for the hubby to feel involved. . . .

Hey Shell... That movie is called The Business of Babies. You should check it out. I kinda wish I was having another one now, after watching that. Have you come to any decisions yet? I have that Hypnobirthing book and cd if you want to borrow it...

hey michelle.
i found your blog on melinda's and I'm so excited for you that you are expecting. what a big step - it will be hard but it is so awesome being a mom.
you should check out our blog,
skanchyfam.blogspot.com

*we did a hypnobirthing class that we liked - i especially liked that it got my husband involved. and then we did a breastfeeding class that I also thought was really helpful. i think for your first baby you should do those kinds of classes together - it's all part of the experience.

First things first: Did you get your ultrasound today?

We took a-once-a-week-for-four-weeks birthing class and ended up having our baby by week 2. But what I did learn was good. The whole thing really freaked my out because it made it seem so much more dramatic than it really was. So the fact that actual labor was a world better than I was planning on it to be, made the class worth it!

if you are planning on nursing, i recommend a breastfeeding class. they teach you very effective methods for not getting battle wounds from the whole ordeal, and really prepared me in a positive way for the amazing experience!
